OUR PROCESS
01
A properly prepared gravel base.
The gravel base in which your driveway is laid upon is one of the most important parts of the asphalt driveway paving process. Gravel is used as an asphalt base for a couple of reasons:
Gravel will compact firmly and settle with little movement.
Gravel allows for proper drainage, preventing underground water from being backed up underneath the asphalt driveway.
ADVANTAGES:
Less damage caused due to our climate frost cycle, preventing heaving and sinking.
A gravel base won't hold water and become soft, allowing vehicles using the driveway to sink and cause damage.
Driveways that are well prepared should have all topsoil and clay conditions excavated and removed. They should have an average thickness of 6 inches of gravel.
02
New gravel should be compacted and allowed time to settle.
Proper compaction of the gravel with a vibrator roller or tamper, is a key step in the paving procedure. After compacted, the new gravel should be allowed to settle for 5-7 days (if area was excavated 6 inches or more). This allows the gravel to gain strength and do any natural settling that may occur. During this stage, the homeowners are encouraged to use their driveway, to help compact the new gravel with the weight of their vehicles.
03
Proper thickness and compaction of asphalt.
Asphalt driveways should be 2.5-3 inches thick before being rolled. After the loose asphalt is rolled and compacted, it should have an average thickness of 2 inches. Newly paved driveways should be allowed 72 hours to cure before vehicles are driven or parked on them.
04
Proper drainage is key.
Driveways should be graded and paved in a way that will allow any water, due to rain or melting snow, to run freely off the driveway, without interfering with the house, or its components (windows, doors, etc.).
05
Be sure to hire an experienced professional.
Ensure a proper job is done by hiring a local contractor who is willing to give references, and show the work their company has completed in the area.
